Warnings have escalated in the town of Haboush and neighboring areas due to the worsening crisis of burning waste in the Al-Kfour landfill, and the resulting toxic emissions, unpleasant odors, and dense fumes that threaten public safety, amid calls for immediate action to stop what was described as an “environmental and health tragedy.”
The residents explained in a statement issued by them that the random burning operations were carried out in isolation from any environmental or health standards, which led to the spread of polluted fumes and suffocating odors within the residential neighborhoods. The statement indicated that this recurring phenomenon poses serious risks to the health of citizens, especially children and the elderly.
As a result, the people of Habbush held an emergency meeting with the president and members of the municipal council, devoted to discussing the serious repercussions of the landfill and landfill crisis on the people of the town and surrounding villages, in light of a state of anger and overwhelming popular dissatisfaction with the continuation of the current situation.
The attendees stressed the need for the Municipal Council to assume its responsibility and take urgent action to stop random burning, and follow up the file with the competent official and environmental authorities to take strict measures to protect residents from harmful emissions.
The people considered that the issue had gone beyond being a passing environmental crisis to become a direct violation of the human right to live in a safe and secure environment, stressing that the risks resulting from burning waste were now threatening the lives of residents and could not be underestimated.
The attendees called for finding sustainable solutions to treat waste according to scientific principles, instead of temporary solutions that spread the damage between regions.
The people of Habbush concluded their cry by saying: “Al-Kafour landfill is killing us and our children,” stressing that they will not stand idly by in the face of this imminent danger, and that they are awaiting practical and quick steps from the municipality and official authorities that will put an end to their suffering and protect their right to a clean and healthy environment.
