South Korean national team coach Hong Myung-bo resigned from his position, against the backdrop of official calls issued by the South Korean president to conduct an expanded investigation into the reasons for the early exit from the 2026 World Cup.
The South Korean Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday that Hong had officially submitted his resignation, after the disappointing performance in the tournament, where the team was content with scoring only 3 points in the group stage, a result far from expectations.
In this context, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung considered, via the “X” platform, that not reaching the knockout rounds is unacceptable.
He said: “This failure in the World Cup finals, which shocked the Korean fans, is a failure at the system and individual levels.”
The Korean President added: “Since large sums of taxpayer money and state resources are being spent, I ask the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to analyze this situation and its causes, and study the necessary measures to avoid its recurrence in the future.”
