The uranium file brings back tension: a heated confrontation between Tehran and Grossi

The Iranian nuclear file has entered a new chapter of diplomatic tension between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, against the backdrop of the exchange of unions and positions regarding the stock of highly enriched uranium and UN inspection mechanisms.

In this context, the Iranian mission to the United Nations in Vienna, today, Wednesday, denounced the statements of the Agency’s Director General, Rafael Grossi, considering that he focused on expressing concern about the Iranian uranium stockpile, at a time when the Agency, as it described it, turned a blind eye to the attacks that Iran was subjected to.

The Iranian mission stressed that “every gram of Iranian nuclear material is subject to accountability and follow-up” by the international body, stressing that the agency’s own reports did not monitor any case of diversion of nuclear materials for undeclared uses.

This debate came in response to a briefing presented by Rafael Grossi before the UN Security Council on October 27, during which he expressed the agency’s concern about about 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium. Grossi called on Tehran to provide the necessary information and allow international inspectors to access the relevant sites to verify the safety of these materials.

Grossi explained that the agency was forced to withdraw its inspectors from Iran at the end of June 2025 for security reasons following the military operations, pointing out that verification activities were limited to the Bushehr station, while the agency insists on resuming access to the rest of the sites.

For its part, Tehran constantly affirms the peacefulness of its nuclear program, as the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Baghaei, recently reaffirmed this position, in light of the continuing fundamental dispute with the International Agency regarding the scope of inspections and the right of access to sensitive facilities.
