China confirmed on Wednesday that preventing the resumption of hostilities in the Middle East represents a “top priority” in its diplomatic moves with countries in the region, warning of the potentially catastrophic repercussions of any renewal of military confrontations on its population.
The Chinese position was stated by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during a press conference during which she stressed that avoiding military escalation constitutes the most important necessity at the current stage to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
This position coincides with statements made by Chinese President Xi Jinping two days ago during his discussions with the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, during which he affirmed his country’s rejection of the Middle East and Gulf region becoming an arena for competition between major powers, expressing Beijing’s readiness to cooperate with Arab countries to achieve lasting peace.
In light of the radical changes the world is witnessing, the Chinese President explained the necessity of fortifying the Gulf region against the repercussions of geopolitical conflicts, stressing that “peace and stability in the region require joint care and protection from all parties.”
Xi renewed his country’s firm commitment to the necessity of stopping the war, stressing Beijing’s aspiration to contribute “wisdom and solutions” to address the security dilemmas plaguing the region.
The Chinese President concluded by stressing his country’s readiness to strengthen channels of communication and coordination with Arab countries, especially the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, to work jointly towards restoring peace and establishing the foundations of permanent security and stability.
