The Minister of Energy and Water, Joe Al-Saddi, issued strict directives to the Board of Directors of the Electricité du Liban Corporation requiring that electricity be cut off from all official institutions that default on paying their bills and financial dues to the Corporation, stressing his full support for this approach without any exceptions.
In television statements he made on Saturday, Al-Saddi indicated that the recent warning measures resulted in reaching an agreement with the Beirut Airport administration, which stipulates the immediate payment of the due arrears, and the rescheduling of the remaining amount, in addition to a commitment to regular payment of monthly bills.
Al-Saddi called for the necessity of continuing this pressure approach on all state institutions, explaining that the primary goal is to enable the Electricité du Liban to increase feeding hours, which requires an operating budget estimated at approximately $50 million per month, until the second demand of adopting a moving tariff is approved.
The Minister of Energy stressed that what is required of state institutions is only a commitment to pay their dues, saying: “We do not ask for loans or advances from the treasury, but rather we ask for payment of duties, compensation for exemptions, and the costs of war repairs in the south, equivalent to 50 million dollars per month.”
