Strict pledges from Binance to secure user deposits following a historic $6.3 billion hack

The Binance platform, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, is seeking to recover about $6.3 billion in digital assets that were stolen in a cyberattack described as “complex,” while the company announced its success in freezing about half of the stolen funds and securing assets worth $3 billion, while the rest is still in the possession of unknown hackers, in a hack believed to be the largest of its kind so far.

“Binance” explained that investigations revealed multiple points of penetration indicating the expansion of the scope of the attack compared to initial expectations, which suggested that it began by hacking the laptop of one of the company’s engineers, adding that the attackers used a self-destruct mechanism to erase the traces and digital tools used, which made the tracking process difficult.

Several companies specialized in analyzing cryptocurrency data, most notably Chain Analysis and TRM Labs, linked the attack to North Korean hacking groups, based on the similarity of methods to previous incidents such as the hacking of the Bybit platform in 2025. It is noteworthy that Pyongyang constantly denies these accusations related to its reliance on electronic crimes to evade international sanctions.

On the legal and security front, the US Secret Service announced its work around the clock to track down, freeze and recover the stolen funds and bring the perpetrators to justice, while Binance confirmed its cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), noting that the platform designated for American users was not affected, despite the attack’s inclusion of assets linked to the US market such as the stable currencies “Tether” and “Circle.”

In an attempt to contain the crisis, Binance assured its users that their funds are safe and the company will bear the responsibility of covering all losses, with deposit operations continuing to operate normally. However, the developments raised concerns in the markets that led to a decline in the price of Bitcoin by 5% to $76,800, a decline in Coinbase shares by about 12%, and Robinhood by 7.8%.

Binance was founded in China in 2017, and its number of users is estimated at more than 300 million, and the value of the assets it holds on behalf of its clients exceeded $160 billion in 2024. This crisis raised concerns about the platform’s ability to withstand losses of this size, which led some to compare it to the collapse of the FTX platform in 2022, amid warnings from legal experts such as Daniel Tunkle from the British office of Edwin Coe, against considering pledges. The company provides a legally binding guarantee without resorting to the judiciary and contracts concluded with customers.
