The assassination of a Palestinian leader coinciding with an Israeli escalation puts the party in the spotlight

On Tuesday, the Israeli army and the Shin Bet announced the assassination of Ramadan Diab Abu Shehadeh, who was described as the head of the Popular Resistance Committees in Khan Yunis, in an air strike that targeted the area south of the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army spokeswoman, Ella Wawiya, explained in a blog post on the “X” platform that the operation was carried out under the pretext of “removing the threat” posed by the target, accusing him of working to push the implementation of operations against Israeli forces and Israelis, and contributing to rebuilding the capabilities of the Hamas movement during the war period, specifically in recent times.

According to the Israeli statement, the Popular Resistance Committees are a Palestinian organization founded in 2000, and the army claims that they are currently linked to Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, noting that members of them participated in the October 7 attack and in military operations against Israeli forces.

The statement also accused Abu Shehadeh of committing what it described as a “systematic violation of the ceasefire,” stressing that Israeli forces are deployed in the region in accordance with the existing agreement, and that they will continue to move to confront any “immediate threat.”
