Party gun control battle heats up in Florida negotiations

The Florida State meetings between the Lebanese and Israeli delegations concluded without reaching a political or security breakthrough, following the continuing fundamental disagreements over mechanisms for monitoring security arrangements in southern Lebanon, and Tel Aviv’s role in verifying the removal of Hezbollah’s weapons, as well as the timetable for Israeli withdrawal.

In this context, an American source told Al-Arabiya channel that the consultations led by Washington with the two sides did not succeed in bridging the gap between their positions, despite the efforts made to address the main points of disagreement and bring viewpoints closer together.

The source explained that the negotiations faced obstacles related to identifying the countries participating in monitoring the security arrangements in the south, in addition to the Israeli side’s insistence on direct participation in the processes of verifying the disarmament of Hezbollah.

On the other hand, the Lebanese side categorically rejects any direct Israeli role in these operations, insisting on the formation of an independent international mechanism responsible for verifying disarmament and monitoring the implementation of security agreements.

The source added that the complications were not limited to monitoring mechanisms only, but also extended to the lack of consensus on an accurate and specific timetable for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanese territories.

Despite the intense diplomatic efforts undertaken by the American side to heal the rift, the curtain fell on the Florida meetings without concluding a final agreement, so the files of field monitoring, the weapons verification mechanism, the Israeli role, and the timing of the withdrawal remain unresolved issues awaiting future rounds of negotiations.
