American basketball star, LeBron James, sparked controversy with his sarcastic response to criticism from President Donald Trump, who accused him of disrespecting the United States due to his actions during the playing of the national anthem before a professional league match.
According to Agence France-Presse, James merely smiled and avoided a long comment when reporters asked him about Trump’s statements, after leading his team to a pivotal victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers with a score of 114-106, then he briefly commented, saying: “It seems that it was a day when news was scarce in the office.”
Trump had posted on his “Truth Social” platform a video clip showing James performing physical warm-up movements during the playing of the national anthem, considering this behavior a clear insult to the country, and demanding that he make an official apology to the American soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defense of the homeland.
This debate is an extension of a series of accumulated political differences between the two parties, as James has previously directed sharp criticism of Trump’s political positions, especially those related to issues of racism and concepts of social justice in the United States.
