Al-Ahly defeats Zamalek and wins the African Handball Championship title

The Egyptian Al-Ahly team won the African Club Handball Championship for the fourth time in a row, following its marathon and exciting victory over its traditional rival, Zamalek, with a score of 26-25 in the final match held in Angola on Wednesday.

The match witnessed fierce competition, as Zamalek ended the first half with a 10-9 lead, before Al-Ahly rose up in the second half, which ended in a 22-22 draw, which necessitated resorting to extra time. In extra time, the tie between the two teams continued at 24-24, until Al-Ahly was able to decide the match for Souha by one goal at the end of the fourth extra period.

Zamalek had reached the final match after defeating Angola’s Petro Atlético with a score of 35-21 in the semi-finals, while Al-Ahly qualified at the expense of Kinshasa of Congo by defeating it with a score of 38-20 in the same round.

With this coronation, Al-Ahly raised its tally to 9 continental titles in the history of the tournament, ranking third behind Mouloudia Algiers, which has 11 titles, while Zamalek tops the list of the most crowned champions with 12 titles.

This victory confirms Al-Ahly’s recent superiority over Zamalek, after it had snatched a bronze medal from them in the Super Globe Club World Cup, which was hosted by Egypt early last October, after defeating them 30-25.
