Expected escalation: Infantino faces his opponents in a battle of breaking his will within a meeting "FIFA" The decisive one

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is preparing for an anticipated confrontation with his opponents during the Federation Council meeting scheduled to be held on Thursday in the Swiss city of Zurich, in light of escalating disputes over his management style and the future of a number of financial and sports projects.

This is the Council’s first meeting since April 28, and comes against the backdrop of the crisis sparked by Infantino’s proposal to open the door to private investors to participate in financing major competitions, such as the World Cup, before it was withdrawn following widespread objections from continental federations, most notably the European Union, the Asian Confederation, and the Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF).

Despite the intensity of the criticism directed at him, Infantino enters the meeting supported by continued support from federations in Africa and South America, in addition to the lack of consensus among his opponents to present a competing candidate for him in the FIFA presidential elections scheduled for March 2027.

At the top of the meeting’s agenda is the discussion of a financial plan worth about $6.35 billion to be distributed during the period between 2027 and 2030, which includes increasing the financial allocations provided to the 211 national federations that are members of the international organization.

The Council is also expected to discuss a package of reforms related to governance and decision-making mechanisms, coinciding with increasing demands to grant continental federations a greater and more effective role in managing global football affairs.

The meeting represents a turning point for Infantino, who is seeking to contain internal divisions and consolidate his influence in preparation for the upcoming elections, while the heated debate continues regarding the future of FIFA’s institutional management and the criteria for distributing powers and financial resources.
