London: The British government escalated its diplomatic and security stance towards Tehran, announcing the recall of the Iranian ambassador and a new package of sanctions, following the revelation of a security plot targeting the Fairford air base used by the US army.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham explained during a session of the House of Commons on Monday that investigations and intelligence assessments “highly suggest” that Tehran is behind this threat, stressing that it was carried out “almost certainly under the direction of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.” Burnham stressed that the United Kingdom “will not tolerate these threats on its territory.”
As part of the immediate response, the British government announced the imposition of strict sanctions that include two Iranian citizens; One of them is directly involved in planning or preparing to launch attacks targeting British territory or other countries.
These field developments come about a week after London approved new legislation imposing severe sanctions on Iran, and expanding the scope of trade restrictions and powers related to targeting ships, in a move aimed at curbing the Iranian nuclear program and undermining its hostile regional activities.
The new British measures include restricting Tehran’s access to the UK’s financial system, expanding the trade embargo to include additional goods, technologies and services, as well as prohibiting Iranian aircraft from landing at British airports except in specific exceptional cases.
In conclusion, the British Prime Minister renewed his country’s firm commitment to preventing Iran from possessing nuclear weapons, in addition to working tirelessly with allies to establish peace in the Middle East, ensure freedom of navigation, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
