Meta gives Facebook users advanced control over the content shown on their main profiles

Meta announced the launch of a new feature called “Your Algorithm” on the Facebook platform, in a move aimed at giving users greater control over the nature of the posts and videos that appear to them, and changing the mechanism of work of content ranking algorithms that have long relied exclusively on the previous activity and behavior of users.

The new feature is available to include content displayed on the home page and short Reels videos, where users can access the controls and modify preferences directly from the options list next to any post.

The feature allows users to express their preferences in natural language and through their own words, instead of being limited to limited choices or relying only on likes, views and comments. For example, the user can now request more scientific and technical news, or reduce the appearance of certain entertainment content.

When an inappropriate post appears, the system provides the “Not Interested” option, while the “Interested” option allows requesting similar content, with the possibility of the system asking additional questions to understand the reasons for preference more accurately. Meta confirms that recommendations will change in real time in response to these immediate directives during the same usage session.

This technology relies on large linguistic models that enable recommendation systems to understand the meaning and context behind user requests instead of simply monitoring interactions. The company is betting that this understanding of written instructions will make the suggested content more compatible with users’ actual desires.
