At least three people were killed during massive celebrations in the capital, Mexico City, after the Mexican national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, according to what local authorities announced.
The city’s Minister of Health reported that two women, aged 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man, died as a result of suffocation resulting from the severe stampede.
For her part, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed, during a press conference, her full solidarity with the families of the victims, stressing that the authorities will stand by them and provide them with all forms of assistance and support.
In the quarter-finals, the Mexican national team will meet, on the field of Asteca Stadium, the English national team or the Democratic Republic of the Congo national team.
