The Mexico national team has continued its successful campaign so far in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after qualifying for the round of 16 in the competition, following a 2-0 victory over the Ecuadorian national team, on Tuesday evening, local time, in the round of 32 of the World Cup, which is currently being held in the United States and Canada, in addition to Mexico.

At Mexico City Stadium, the Mexican national team took the lead with a goal through Julián Quiñones in the 22nd minute, before his veteran teammate Raul Jimenez added the second goal in the 31st minute.

The Ecuadorian national team finished the match with ten players, after its player, Piero Hincapie, was sent off in the fifth minute of stoppage time for the second half.

The Mexican national team has set an expected date in the round of 16 of the tournament on July 5, with the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which will be held on Wednesday evening, local time, as part of the round of 32 competitions.

The Mexico national team qualified for the knockout rounds after topping the standings of Group A, which included South Africa, the Czech Republic, and South Korea, with 9 points, achieving the full mark after winning all three of its matches.

Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the current World Cup, before winning 1-0 over South Korea, and 3-0 over the Czech national team.

On the other hand, the Ecuadorian national team advanced to the knockout stage, after being among the best 8 third-placed teams in the 12 groups in the first round.

The Ecuadorian national team was in third place in Group Five, which included Germany, Curaçao and Côte d’Ivoire, with 4 points, after winning one match, losing and drawing the same.

The Ecuadorian national team opened its tournament campaign with a 0-1 loss to Côte d’Ivoire, then fell into the trap of a goalless draw with the Curaçao national team, which participated for the first time in the World Cup, before setting off a resounding surprise with a 2-1 victory over the German national team in the final round of the group.
