Political disputes are escalating in Lebanon, rising from the level of differences of opinion to an outright crisis, following the growing dissatisfaction of both President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam with the performance of the head of the Lebanese Forces Party, Samir Geagea, who is participating in the government with four ministers, in parallel with an ongoing political escalation against its decisions.
Ministerial sources revealed to the website that the state of presidential and governmental dissatisfaction came to light during the cabinet session held yesterday, against the backdrop of a faltering decision on referring the Dahr al-Baydar and Qasr explosives case to the Judicial Council. The sources explained that the “Forces” ministers left the session hall, describing their step as “sovereign withdrawal,” and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam responded decisively by saying: “This is populist and we are used to you.”
The same sources considered that the “Lebanese Forces” party possesses complete institutional channels within the government for objection, discussion, and voting, but resorting to withdrawal and marketing differences in the street turns government participation into a populist pressure tool, instead of addressing files within official institutions.
In this context, the sources indicated that despite the legitimacy of the “Forces” demand to refer the aforementioned case, postponing a decision on the file does not justify dealing with the executive authority according to the logic of dictates. She stressed that the administration of the state is not managed according to the desires of parties and leaders, stressing that disputes over decisions are resolved through discussion and bearing national responsibility away from bidding under the title of sovereignty.
The sources concluded by confirming that what angers Aoun and Salam is the constant contradiction between full involvement in the government and escalation outside it at every controversial stage, warning that this approach weakens the ranks of the forces supporting the state and intensifies internal divisions, which is in the interest of their political opponents.
