The law proposal submitted by Representative George Adwan, last Tuesday, to shorten the mandate of the House of Representatives, has revived the political debate about the parliamentary due date and the positions of the blocs regarding it amid the current local and regional circumstances.
In this context, Representative Salim Aoun expressed his surprise at raising questions about his team’s position on the elections, stressing that this position was known for its categorical rejection of the extension through practice and legal appeal, citing the appeal submitted by the movement against the recent extension of the Parliament.
Aoun stressed his commitment to holding the elections on the specified date, but he added from a realistic angle by saying: “If we are able to hold the elections in 2028,” raising a fundamental question about whether the election will be granted at that time or will it be subject to a new extension, and considering that his reading of reality is based on concrete data and not on theoretical slogans.
Aoun pointed out that even regardless of the current circumstances and events and assuming that the internal and external crises have resolved, differences remain regarding the application of the electoral law and the mechanism for its amendments, wondering to what extent it is possible to hold elections in light of this division, even in normal circumstances.
Regarding the background of the “Lebanese Forces” party’s move to bring the election date closer, Aoun avoided describing the step as not serious, calling on the other hand to direct the question to the “Lebanese Forces” about how to achieve this goal, and the mechanism for implementing the law in the current circumstances, and concluding by calling for a commitment to implementing the ministerial statement before taking new steps.
