Representative Adeeb Abdel Masih reopened the file of parliamentary elections and the extension of the House of Representatives, raising a series of questions about the reasons for the previous extension, and warning at the same time that the step of shortening the current term may constitute a gateway to a longer-term extension in the future.
In his post on the “X” platform, Abdel Masih placed “in the custody of the Lebanese people” the reasons he relied on when he proposed a law in February 2026 to postpone the parliamentary elections for only one year, ending on May 31, 2027.
He pointed out that although he was subjected to severe criticism at the time, the course of affairs in the Parliament led to the approval of extending the term for two years, pointing out that he did not receive support for his proposal, and stressing that he was among the representatives who abstained from voting in favor of the two-year extension.
Abdel Masih touched on the current discussions about a proposed law that aims to hold elections in 2027 by shortening the Council’s current term, wondering whether the positive reasons on which the previous extension was based have actually disappeared.
He continued, asking: “Was the state able to finish extending its control over all Lebanese lands and confine illegal weapons to its control? Did the war end and the southerners returned to their villages? Did Israel withdraw?”
Abdul Masih concluded by warning that shortening the Council’s mandate may not necessarily lead to early elections as rumored, considering that “shortening is a door to a longer extension in the future,” concluding by saying: “And God is All-Knowing, and He is a witness to what I say.”
