An Israeli security source revealed that Hezbollah is working to rebuild its military capabilities and restore its infrastructure in Beirut and southern Lebanon, stressing that the party still possesses a military arsenal and diverse combat capabilities sufficient to fight a confrontation that will last several months, at a time when the Israeli army is preparing for the possibility of a new round of fighting breaking out against the backdrop of any military escalation against Iran.
According to a report by journalist Amir Boukhbout published by the Israeli Walla website, the Israeli military establishment is following up on the rehabilitation of Hezbollah’s capabilities, amid dissatisfaction with the Lebanese army’s performance in implementing security understandings, especially in the areas that are supposed to be under its control.
The report indicated that the Lebanese army a few days ago uncovered a tunnel attributed to Hezbollah in the New Ruwaisat area, east of Beirut. However, the Israeli security source considered that the announcement of its discovery aimed to show the movement of the Lebanese army inside the capital, to which it says Hezbollah transferred part of its military capabilities from the south, and where it is working to restore facilities that were damaged or destroyed as a result of the Israeli raids.
The source said: “We are not satisfied with the Lebanese mechanism, and the presence of Hezbollah tunnels does not surprise us. We believe that the publication of this information is linked to the talks between Israel and Lebanon in Rome. In the end, the understandings are not being implemented in the way we expect, and there are still terrorist infrastructure and armed elements in southern Lebanon.”
He added that Israeli information indicates the presence of extensive military structures and continuous attempts to strengthen Hezbollah’s capabilities, not only in the south, but also in Beirut and Tyre, where there are large Shiite population concentrations.
He explained that the party is making great efforts to restore its operational expertise and raise the readiness of its military units to their previous levels.
Regarding combat capabilities, the report stated that Israeli estimates indicate that Hezbollah maintains an arsenal that includes missiles and rocket-propelled grenades of various ranges, and “Seeb” and “Sim” type drones, which the Israeli military establishment describes as posing a major challenge to its forces, in addition to tactical drones and suicide aircraft.
The source confirmed that these capabilities, according to Israeli estimates, allow the party to fight various battles that will last several months, despite the strikes it was exposed to.
He also indicated that Hezbollah is working around the clock to retrain and rehabilitate anti-armor missile groups and surveillance and reconnaissance units, in preparation for a possible future confrontation with Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and along the border.
In a remarkable development, the report revealed that one of the military scenarios presented to Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir included the possibility of Hezbollah entering into a military confrontation and striking the Israeli depth, if the United States or Israel launched an attack on Iran.
These data, according to the Israeli narrative, reflect fears that any confrontation with Iran will turn into a war that extends to the Lebanese front, in light of Hezbollah continuing to rebuild its military capabilities, and the Israeli dispute with Lebanon over the extent of implementing the security understandings.
