The former Director General of Public Security, Major General Abbas Ibrahim, called for the necessity of dealing with the Taif Agreement as an integrated state-building project, criticizing the “selectivity” that has characterized the implementation of its provisions since its approval in 1989, and at the same time stressing the legitimacy of the peoples’ right to liberate their lands.
In statements he made to the “Lebanon Debate” website on the sidelines of the “National Meeting” dedicated to discussing the general situation and current challenges in Lebanon, Ibrahim explained that the discussion focused on the Taif Agreement in all its aspects, stressing that “the right of peoples to liberate their lands is considered a legitimate human right, and that the agreement has clearly confirmed this right.”
In response to a question about the reasons why implementing the Taif Agreement currently seems like “impossible,” Major General Ibrahim attributed this to the fragmented approach to its provisions, explaining by saying: “Because, unfortunately, we have dealt with the Taif Agreement from 1989 until today as if it were a list from which each party chooses what suits its interests.”
Ibrahim concluded by stressing that overcoming the current reality and reaching an actual implementation of the agreement begins exclusively by changing this approach, and considering Taif as an integrated system aimed at building the state, which opens the door to its implementation in the required manner.
