Lebanese fishermen demand a modern law that protects their rights

The “Gathering of Lebanese Fishermen’s Cooperatives and Syndicates” committee held a dialogue meeting in the port of Doura in the presence of representatives of the sector, devoted to discussing professional developments and the proposed legislative path for developing marine fishing in Lebanon.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the attendees affirmed their initial keenness to move the sector towards modernization and sustainability, stressing the necessity of adopting a fair law that is compatible with the current economic and social conditions, and guarantees the protection of the rights of fishermen and the stability of their families in parallel with the preservation of marine and environmental wealth.

The statement explained that the issue of marine fishing is based on partnership and integration with state institutions and relevant ministries and is not a path of confrontation, declaring openness to responsible investment and development initiatives that provide job security for local sailors.

The gathering also called for adopting constructive amendments to old legislative texts and launching an objective dialogue that balances the 1929 law with modern proposals for the year 2026.

The statement concluded by emphasizing continued communication with parliamentary blocs, ministers, and activists to communicate the demands of fishermen, and to reach legislation that protects the sector and preserves the sea, as it is an integral part of the national economy.
