Instagram announced the update of its Wordmark, that is, the written design of the platform’s name, after about 10 years of using the previous design. The change comes within the framework of the platform’s attempt to modernize its visual identity while, at the same time, preserving some elements that are linked to its history and original character.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained that the old design has not changed in 10 years, so it is time for an update.
He said that the new design is cleaner and more modern, while retaining references to the original form, in addition to focusing on the simplicity and craftsmanship that has always distinguished Instagram. But the change does not include the famous Instagram application icon, which remained unchanged, as the innovation focuses on the way the word Instagram is written within the visual identity of the platform.
The new design represents an unusual combination of cursive and traditional typography, in a clear attempt to combine the old Instagram identity with the more modern direction adopted by the platform. However, the result was not unanimously welcomed.
Some users saw that the new logo lost part of the personality and appeal that made the previous design familiar over the past years. While some considered the update simple and modern, others focused on a more fundamental issue: the readability of the name. (Erm News)
