The Norwegian national team qualified for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, after defeating Côte d’Ivoire with a score of 2-1, in an exciting match that was decided in the last minutes, while the Ivorian national team bid farewell to the tournament.








The match began with early attempts from both sides, as Erling Haaland appeared for the first time in the third minute with a header after a cross from the left side, but the Ivorian defense cleared the ball. Côte d’Ivoire responded with attempts through Yann Diomande and Nicolas Pepe, but the Norwegian defense remained present.

In the 19th minute, Côte d’Ivoire had a dangerous opportunity after Konan penetrated into the penalty area and his right-hand shot hit the side netting. Minutes later, the Ivorian team was active with counters, especially from Diomande and Pepe, but Iyer and Pederson intervened on more than one ball to ward off the danger.

Norway almost added the second goal quickly, after Sorloth passed a ball towards Haaland in the 41st minute, but Sangari intervened and saved Côte d’Ivoire. Then Sorloth came close again to scoring in the 43rd minute with a header that passed close to the goal.

In stoppage time of the first half, Côte d’Ivoire demanded a penalty kick after Pepe fell inside the area, before Agbado missed an opportunity from a cross ball played by Pepe, ending the first phase with Norway leading 1-0.

At the beginning of the second half, the Ivorian team entered strongly in search of an equalizer. In the 48th minute, Pepe distributed a dangerous ball that the Norwegian goalkeeper interfered with with difficulty, before it reached Konan, who sent a cross towards Bony, but the Norwegian defense removed the danger.

In the 54th minute, goalkeeper Neyland excelled and blocked a dangerous shot from Pepe. Then Kessie returned and missed another opportunity in the 55th minute after a pass from Pepe, but his ball was weak in the goalkeeper’s hands.

In the 86th minute, Norway decided the match after a through pass reached Haaland, who put the ball into the net, scoring Norway’s second goal.

The last minutes witnessed great pressure from Côte d’Ivoire in search of an equaliser. In the 90th+1 minute, Konan sent a cross that almost fell into Neyland’s goal, but the goalkeeper intervened brilliantly. Then the Ivorian team received a dangerous free kick in the 90th + 4th minute, before Neyland shone again in the 90th + 6th minute with a wonderful save from Kessie’s shot.

The Ivorian attempts continued until the 90th + 7th minute through a corner kick taken by Amad, but the Norwegian defense intervened and ended the danger.

The match ended with Norway’s victory 2-1, reaching the round of 16, while Côte d’Ivoire left the tournament after a match in which it fought until the last moments.
