The Finance and Budget Committee will hold a meeting, tomorrow, Tuesday, headed by MP Ibrahim Kanaan, to discuss the expedited draft law received from the government pursuant to Decree No. 4210. The project aims to open an additional appropriation worth 8,950 billion Lebanese pounds (equivalent to one hundred million dollars) in the general budget for the year 2026, as part of the budget reserve, to pay part of the dues of the Electricité du Liban Corporation.
This move comes to address the problems that accompanied the cutting of electricity to a number of public institutions and administrations due to the accumulation of dues, and the negative repercussions it had on citizens. In this context, Representative Ibrahim Kanaan had previously affirmed his categorical refusal to hold citizens accountable for the consequences of accumulating dues or to punish them twice after they paid their bills and were deprived of service, stressing the importance of addressing the issue within legal frameworks.
It will be decided, after the additional appropriation is approved in the Finance Committee, to be included on the agenda of the general legislative session scheduled for next week. While providing this credit represents an essential step to pay part of the financial obligations, Kanaan stressed that it does not replace the need to address the root causes of the crisis and determine responsibilities for their accumulation.
