Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a phone call with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, discussed the ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, in conjunction with Ankara’s preparations to hold expanded consultations with Moscow.
The Turkish presidency stated in a statement that Erdogan expressed his aspiration that the intensive diplomatic efforts would yield positive results, stressing his country’s readiness to continue playing its role in the settlement process, and stressing the importance of strengthening channels of communication with both Kiev and Moscow to stop the conflict.
This call comes in the wake of the Turkish President’s announcement, on Thursday, of plans by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to hold discussions with the Russian side in preparation for possible negotiations.
Erdogan explained, in statements to reporters on the plane returning from South Korea, that these advance contacts led by the Foreign Minister aim to prepare the Russian side for the upcoming talks, before holding any possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
These accelerated movements reflect the continued active diplomatic role played by Ankara between Washington, Moscow and Kiev, in an attempt to push international efforts towards finding a peace settlement that ends the ongoing war.
