Diplomatic summons and the escalation of the crisis: Brazil confronts Argentina against the backdrop of the Bolsonaro file

On Thursday, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the representative of the Argentine embassy in Brasilia to obtain an official clarification regarding the passage of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro through Argentine territory on his way to the United States, in a move that diplomatic sources described as a “routine procedure.”

Bolsonaro, 45 years old and the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, arrived in the US state of Florida last Wednesday, following a trip that took him through Argentina and Ecuador.

This secret travel of the senator came after his loss in the presidential elections held last Sunday to his leftist rival, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, despite his topping the results of the first round of voting that took place earlier this month, and despite the issuance of a judicial decision requiring him to hand over his passports pending multiple investigations being conducted against him.

After his arrival on American soil, Bolsonaro announced his adherence to his position, considering himself the legitimate president of Brazil.

Bolsonaro’s flight, in light of the public support he receives from US President Donald Trump, raises growing fears of a new wave of political unrest in Brazil, which recently witnessed a tense presidential race that ended with Lula da Silva’s victory in the second round.
