The Ministry of Education retracts the decision to close “Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir” Secondary School in Al-Jadida by merging “Al-Jadida Girls’ Secondary School” into it
Political and educational efforts resulted in a reversal of the decision to close “Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir” high school in the Al-Jadidah area, as the head of the Finance and Budget Committee, MP Ibrahim Kanaan, announced that the Minister of Education and Higher Education, Rima Karami, informed him of adopting his proposal to reopen the high school and preserve its legacy and educational history.
In his tweet on the “X” platform on Monday, Kanaan congratulated the people of the areas of Jdeideh, Bouchrieh, Al Sadd, and the Matn district, in addition to the educational and administrative staff at the school, stressing that the decision came in response to the demands of the people after a series of communications and diligent follow-ups with the Ministry of Education.
Kanaan explained that the solution path culminated in a meeting he held with Minister Karami and her work team in the ministry building last Thursday, which was preceded by a first meeting held in the House of Representatives, in addition to extensive correspondence that took place between the two sides to discuss the file.
The representative revealed the final formula that was approved to save the institution, which stipulates “reopening Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir Secondary School and merging Al-Jadeeda Girls’ Secondary School with it, not the other way around,” in order to ensure its continuity instead of closing it.
At the conclusion of his statement, Kanaan thanked the Minister of Education for her “understanding and response,” considering that this step crowns the efforts of the people of the region with success in preserving an ancient educational edifice that has graduated generations of people from Matn and beyond, and stressing the progress of serious work to achieve more achievements for the benefit of the people of the region.
It is noteworthy that the file of “Al-Akhtal Al-Saghir” High School had sparked a wave of popular and educational objections in rejection of the decision to close it, amid pressure to preserve this institution, which represents an essential part of the educational memory of the Matn District, before recent communications led to the new consensual formula.
