The monitoring of an unidentified aerial object near the Lebanese border brought security concerns back to the forefront in Israel, amid fears of the possible use of gliders similar to the scenario of the attack on October 7, 2023. This development prompted the Israeli army to carry out large-scale search and combing operations in the Western Galilee region.
According to what was reported by the “Erem News” website, the security operation was launched in the evening after activating sirens warning of a possible aircraft infiltration, and was initially focused in the “Arab Al-Aramsha” area and its surroundings, before expanding to include additional areas along the border with Lebanon, and the search work resumed at dawn hours to determine the nature of the object and ensure that the area is free of any security threat.
In the same context, the Hebrew “Walla” website quoted a military source as saying that the army’s systems detected the entry of an unidentified object, and initial estimates indicate that it may be a drone, without ruling out the hypothesis that it used a glider equipped with a motor.
For its part, the Israeli army confirmed that surveillance units detected an unidentified aerial object near the Lebanese border, indicating that its forces are continuing search work without recording any unusual data until the moment, and without issuing any exceptional instructions to the home front.
This incident comes as an extension of a series of similar warnings that the Galilee region witnessed during last September. On September 2, sirens were activated and interceptor missiles were launched before an initial assessment showed that the alarm was false. The warnings were repeated on the 10th of the same month in several residential communities, and it later became clear that the accident resulted from an error in determining the identity of the observed object.
However, the hypothesis that a glider was used in the latest incident brought to mind the attack of October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants used gliders to cross the fence surrounding the Gaza Strip towards the cover settlements, coinciding with a massive launch of missiles to distract the monitoring and surveillance systems, which at the time constituted a shocking element of surprise for the security and military services.
In light of this experience, the Israeli military circles deal with any unknown aerial monitoring near the Lebanese border with extreme sensitivity, amid mounting fears of a repeat of the infiltration scenario across the northern front.
