The rear front cracks: the recruitment crisis pushes Kyiv towards a slide of fateful choices

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are facing a worsening structural crisis due to a severe shortage of human resources, which has prompted a number of men of conscription age to flee outside the country or burn conscription offices to avoid being sent to the battle fronts, while others remain in their homes for long months to avoid arrest.

The Spanish newspaper ABC, quoting unit commanders and representatives of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, revealed that the army is suffering from extreme difficulties in securing the required numbers of recruits, noting that some military units are operating with only half their manpower due to the lack of manpower, which in turn has led to escalating human losses and high rates of desertion from military service.

Soldiers and military analysts attributed the growing desertion cases to several main factors, including constant exhaustion, poor organization, and poor training, as well as the absence of a clear time limit for the end of the service period, which negatively affects the ability of the Ukrainian army to change the balance of power on the battlefield and limits its operations to a limited scope.

In the same context, the British newspaper “The Telegraph” referred to statements made by the former head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kirill Budanov, last August, in which he stressed the need for Kiev to recruit at least 30,000 people per month, which indicates that the volume of human losses in the ranks of the Ukrainian army exceeds the officially announced estimates.

These field challenges coincide with the escalation of popular anger as a result of the violent methods used by conscription office employees, which have repeatedly caused the outbreak of scandals and widespread protests on the right street, amid continuous efforts by those assigned to the service to evade conscription by various means.
