The nightmare of technical superiority terrifies artificial intelligence giants

Major companies specializing in artificial intelligence technologies, most notably OpenAI and Anthropic, are preparing for the possibility of large-scale cyber incidents that could cause serious disruptions in basic services, amid mounting fears of a wave of popular and political anger that will impose strict restrictions on the technology sector.

A report published by the Axios news platform stated that the leadership of these companies is intensifying their preparations to confront extremely dangerous security scenarios, including cyber attacks supported by artificial intelligence capable of disrupting financial systems, Internet networks, and perhaps vital facilities such as electricity and water supplies.

These leaders fear that any major failure or accident will undermine public confidence in modern technologies, and push legislative authorities towards imposing strict regulatory regulations that hinder the development of artificial intelligence systems.

Commenting on these developments, OpenAI explained through an official spokesperson that the company conducts periodic training to deal with a wide range of potential risks, stressing that these proactive scenarios do not necessarily represent inevitable events, but rather aim to raise the level of readiness for crisis management, while Anthropic chose not to comment.

The most prominent technical concerns are the possibility of independent artificial intelligence systems getting out of control during the testing phases, or for malicious parties to exploit these capabilities to carry out complex cyber attacks that are difficult to contain.

These warnings coincide with what was revealed by the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike regarding monitoring strong indications that a Chinese hacker used artificial intelligence tools to carry out attacks targeting financial institutions in South Korea, which led, according to the company’s estimates, to the hacking and theft of data belonging to tens of thousands of customers.

These data confirm the growing concern within the technology sector regarding the increasing security challenges accompanying the rapid development of artificial intelligence systems, especially with their growing ability to perform complex tasks with complete independence.
