The Russian-Ukrainian conflict entered a very sensitive stage after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced, on Saturday, his approval to carry out new long-range operations in response to successive Russian strikes, stressing his country’s readiness to expand its capabilities in this field without revealing details of the goals or the nature of the anticipated operations.
In the field context, Zelensky indicated that Kiev is intensifying its efforts to deploy and develop effective defensive solutions to combat the “Shahed” jet aircraft, in addition to reformulating military priorities on the battle fronts, in conjunction with testing advanced local systems to confront the drones.
This escalation comes amid large-scale air attacks between the two sides. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that air defense forces shot down 344 Ukrainian drones during the night of Friday-Saturday over several Russian regions and the Black Sea, at a time when Kiev did not officially claim responsibility for all of these attacks.
In terms of field progress, Moscow reported that since the beginning of the year, its forces have controlled an area exceeding 5,300 square kilometers and more than 220 towns within Ukrainian territory, including 27 towns during the month of September alone. On the other hand, the Ukrainian General Staff announced that the Russian forces had suffered more than 1,500 deaths and injuries during the past twenty-four hours. These are field figures issued by both sides whose authenticity is impossible to verify independently in light of the continuing military operations.
These developments coincide with both sides intensifying their long-range attacks. Kiev regularly targets vital energy and logistics facilities deep inside Russia as a strategic pressure tool, while Moscow continues its massive strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure as winter approaches, in a scene in which the air strikes reflect a raging escalation that overwhelms the stagnation of the ground front lines.
