From school to the street... How do we protect Lebanese children from the labor market?

“RED TV”

Professor Nezha Saba Shalita, social and educational expert and head of the Anti-Child Labor Unit at the Ministry of Labor, is the guest of the 315 meeting program with journalist Morga Haboushi.

A child of 10 or 12 years old, instead of being in school, spends his day on the street, in workshops, in restaurants, or in workplaces… Has poverty become a justification for depriving children of their childhood and education?

In this episode, we open the file of child labor in Lebanon, and ask about the reasons that push children into the labor market, the role of the family, school, and the state in protecting children, and the effectiveness of inspections and penalties against violating employers.

From children working on the streets, to school dropouts and exploitation, and from the responsibility of parents to the role of the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Social Affairs, Education and the Judiciary… Where does the state’s responsibility begin and where does it end?

Is it enough to remove the child from the workplace? Or does his true salvation begin with providing education, protection, and support for his family, so that he does not return to the street again?

Child labor is not just an economic problem…it is an entire childhood that is at risk of being lost.
