The Independent Ethics Committee of the International Federation of Associations (FIFA) announced that the former Secretary General of the Guyana Football Association, Ian Alves, has been suspended from any activity related to football for a period of five years, after it was proven that he sexually harassed female employees.

FIFA also imposed a fine on Alves of 20,000 Swiss francs ($22,000), after it was found that he violated the provisions of the FIFA Code of Ethics related to the protection of physical and psychological integrity, abuse of position, and public duties.

The International Federation said on Monday: “FIFA takes a firm stance against all forms of abuse in football.”

This decision followed a review of written statements from the victims, documents submitted by the Guyana Football Association, defenses made by Alves, and other evidence collected during the investigation.

Alves stepped down from his position in 2024.

FIFA added that the penalty took effect today, Monday, and Alves was informed of the terms of the decision, and he will be notified of the full merits of the ruling within 60 days in accordance with the Code of Ethics.

The Guyana Football Association did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, and Alves could not be reached for comment.
