The “Instagram” platform announced that it faced a technical malfunction that caused some photos published in black and white to appear, which raised concern and questions among many users around the world about the security of their accounts and the quality of their cameras.
The company confirms that the malfunction has been fixed: The company, affiliated with Meta, explained that the problem is not related to any shortcomings in the users’ devices or account settings, but rather is the result of an internal technical malfunction that particularly affected images published using High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, which is a technology used to improve the quality of images and highlight details and colors with greater accuracy.
Although “Instagram” stated that the problem appeared earlier today, reports and user complaints on various platforms made it clear that the malfunction had been present since April 18 and 19, as some users noticed their recent photos turning into black and white immediately after they were published, or shortly after they were uploaded.
This malfunction led to a state of confusion among users, especially content creators and photographers who depend on image quality and color accuracy in their work, as it directly affected the way visual content was displayed, and raised concerns about losing image quality or causing permanent problems with accounts.
The company confirmed that it was able to determine the cause of the problem and work to solve it, noting that the affected images will automatically return to their original state without the need for any user intervention. It added that the color restoration process may take several hours to be completed for all affected accounts.
Instagram also apologized to users for any inconvenience caused by this malfunction, stressing its commitment to improving the platform’s performance and quickly addressing technical malfunctions to ensure a stable user experience.
This incident sheds light on the technical challenges that major social media platforms may face, especially with their increasing reliance on advanced technologies such as “HDR” and artificial intelligence image processing, which makes them more vulnerable to some temporary technical errors that may affect the users’ experience.
