Bruno Fernandes: We are not playing to save Carrick, and Roma was only a passing stop

Portuguese Bruno Fernandes, captain of Manchester United, confirmed that the team’s players “did not need to save anyone’s position,” following the team’s exciting 3-2 victory over its guest, Roma, on Tuesday, which ended a disappointing streak that extended to 9 consecutive matches without any victory.

This victory came at a time when the club was suffering at the local and continental levels, as the team fell to seventeenth place in the English Premier League standings, with only a goal difference from the relegation zone, in addition to suffering two defeats in the first three rounds of the Champions League, according to the British news agency “PA Media”.

The intensity of pressure on technical director Michael Carrick escalated and became threatening, especially after Manchester United ended the first half trailing with two clean goals at Old Trafford. However, an uprising led by Fernandes, who scored from a penalty kick that was retaken after missing the first attempt, and Matheus Cunha, who scored the equalizing and winning goals, gave the hosts points in the match, although the Brazilian player was later sent off in stoppage time for receiving a second warning.

In statements to the “Prime Video” network, in response to a question about whether the victory saved the coach’s future, Fernandez said: “No, we do not need to save anyone’s position. The club needed this win, and the players too. We were working hard to get out of this situation together.”

The team leader touched on the recent media speculation, saying: “It was a difficult period, and the media witnessed a lot of speculation and lies about things that were said to have happened between me and the technical director.” He explained that Carrick’s decision to keep him on the bench came because of his declining level, adding: “Everyone thought that this was punishment because of the statements I made. If that was the case, then the decision was correct, as the technical director is the one who makes the decision in the end.”

Fernandez concluded by saying: “This does not change my belief in the coach, the technical staff and every player in this club, nor does it change my goal of winning every match that awaits us.”

Manchester United is preparing for an upcoming confrontation against Aston Villa, next Sunday, in the English Premier League, amid high hopes that the victory over Roma will constitute a real turning point and a starting point for restoring confidence this season.
