The villages of the south await winter with a distress call: Diesel fuel is a lifeline for steadfast families

The honorary president of the municipality of Kafra, Mahdi Hamdan, sent an urgent appeal to officials in the Lebanese state, in which he called for rapid intervention to support the steadfast families residing in the town and neighboring towns located on the contact lines, by securing diesel fuel before the cold waves intensified, in light of the exceptional circumstances and the continued bombing.

Hamdan explained in a statement that the urgent need is to secure a minimum of one barrel of diesel (capacity 200 liters) for each family as quickly as possible. He said in this context: “200 liters of diesel is not just a material. It is warmth for a child, dignity for an elderly person, steadfastness for a family, and a message from the Lebanese state to its people saying to them: You are not alone. We all trust your wisdom.”

The statement indicated that the town of Kafra lives in the heart of the confrontation and is subjected to daily bombing, resulting in a complete paralysis of commercial and agricultural movement and the absence of sources of livelihood. Hamdan pointed out that the people, who have suffered greatly between displacement and returning to their destroyed and damaged homes, are waiting for an actual gesture from the state to stand by them.

He explained that the residents’ suffering is worsening with the approach of winter and the harsh cold, pointing out that relying on firewood for heating, which was the “last refuge for the poor,” has become impossible due to administrative obstacles. The applicable laws require citizens wishing to collect firewood from their lands or forests to obtain prior licenses from the Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment, in addition to completing transactions described as long, complex and expensive with the Forestry Commissioner, which may end in rejection.

Hamdan asked in his statement: “How can an old woman, a widow, or a family without a breadwinner bear all this trouble to provide warmth for their children?”, renewing his call on officials to shoulder their responsibilities and secure diesel fuel for steadfast families before it is too late.

This appeal comes amid a very problematic field reality experienced by Kafra and the neighboring towns on the contact line, where a number of residents insist on remaining in their damaged homes, amid demands to provide the minimum requirements for steadfastness and continuity.
