Sarar is reopened on one condition: the government’s promises are at stake

The Sarar landfill crisis in Akkar is heading towards a conditional solution, after days of closure and the municipal and popular escalation that the region witnessed in objection to receiving waste from outside the governorate.

The mayor of Wadi Al-Hour, Sheikh Samir Alman, announced during a press conference held on behalf of the municipalities near the Sarar landfill from the home of MP Asaad Dergham, following a meeting held between the two sides, that the road would be opened exclusively for Akkar waste trucks, starting Saturday morning.

Alman explained that this decision came in response to an official pledge they received from the Prime Minister, to expedite the operation of the sorting plant and the sanitary landfill, in addition to working to address the damage caused to the villages and towns surrounding the landfill and providing justice to their residents.

For their part, the neighboring municipalities stressed that the step to reopen the road does not mean a return to the previous reality; Receiving waste at this stage was limited to the scope of Akkar Governorate alone, stressing that the continued opening of the road remains closely linked to the extent of the government’s commitment to implementing its pledges related to sorting, treatment, and the sanitary landfill.

The roads leading to the landfill were closed in recent days as a result of popular and municipal protests against bringing in waste from outside the region, and demanding that environmental damage be removed, the suspended facilities be operated, and that the development rights of the surrounding villages be fulfilled.

With this development, the Sarar landfill crisis enters a new phase governed by field police, awaiting the outcome of the next government steps to translate pledges and establish a sustainable settlement that prevents renewed protest movements.
