Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, describing it as an important step towards achieving stability, in light of increasing international efforts to enhance calm.
Sharif stressed his country’s “steadfast support for Lebanon’s sovereignty,” stressing that Pakistan will continue to support all endeavors aimed at establishing sustainable peace in the region, expressing his hope that this development will open the way to reaching a permanent settlement.
He also pointed out that the ceasefire was achieved “thanks to the bold and wise efforts” made by US President Donald Trump, referring to the American role in sponsoring the truce between Lebanon and Israel.
In a related context, Reuters quoted a Pakistani source as saying that Washington and Tehran may be moving towards signing a preliminary memorandum of understanding, in preparation for a comprehensive agreement within approximately 60 days, which shows the interconnection between the situation in Lebanon and the broader regional negotiations.
Pakistani positions come in the context of Islamabad’s increasing role as a mediator in indirect communications between the United States and Iran, which clarifies the relationship between the ceasefire file in Lebanon and the broader regional negotiating track.
Welcoming the truce reflects international awareness of the importance of establishing calm on the Lebanese front, to avoid any escalation that might hinder the ongoing negotiations, especially in light of the sensitivity of the current stage.
The emphasis on “Lebanon’s sovereignty” also carries a political dimension, in light of the international debate about the future of security arrangements in the south, the weapons file, and the deployment of forces, which are issues that are still a matter of disagreement between the parties.
On the other hand, talk of a possible agreement between Washington and Tehran within a specific period of time emerges as an indication of the acceleration of the diplomatic path, which may directly affect the stability of the region, including Lebanon.
These developments fall within a complex regional landscape, where international initiatives overlap with realities on the ground, making the success of any path towards lasting peace linked to the parties’ ability to stabilize calm and transform it into a comprehensive political agreement.
