Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced that the company will gradually stop production of Cybertruck trucks at its giant factory in Texas by approximately mid-2027, against the backdrop of years-long weak sales of this futuristic-designed model, which was previously promoted to compete with traditional trucks.
This move represents a major retreat from one of Musk’s favorite projects; He explained in a post on the “X” platform that gradually reducing production will allow the company to boost production of “Cybercab,” an automated taxi that has become the focus of Tesla’s ambitions in the autonomous vehicle sector, even though it has not yet proven its commercial feasibility. It has not yet been decided whether the production of “Cybertruck” will be transferred to another facility or will be stopped permanently, noting that the company’s factory in Austin is the only known facility equipped to manufacture it.
In response to a user on the “X” platform, Musk described the “Cybertruck” as “the best vehicle Tesla has ever made,” considering the decision to stop its production as “the end of an era.” In contrast, Tesla continues to shift its focus towards the robotics and autonomous driving sectors. It is a transformation that analysts believe is taking place at the expense of the electric car sector, which the company previously led, in conjunction with Chinese competitors strengthening their presence in the market.
It is noteworthy that “Tesla” began delivering “Cybertruck” trucks to customers in late 2023. Data from the “Kelly Blue Book” automotive platform shows that the company sold only 20,237 units in the United States last year, recording a decline of 48% compared to 2024, which witnessed the sale of 38,965 cars, while Musk had expected, when production began in 2023, that annual sales would reach 250 thousand cars.
This announcement comes at the end of a difficult week that saw Musk’s companies lose more than $180 billion in market value in total. Musk had spent about half a billion dollars supporting the US Congressional midterm election races that took place last Tuesday, but this money did not yield significant results, as the vast majority of the Republican candidates he supported lost in their constituencies.
