Syrian customs cadres thwarted an attempt to smuggle a quantity of narcotic substances carefully hidden inside a loudspeaker through the “Qamar Bridge” border crossing with Lebanon, in the latest seizure operation witnessed at the crossings between the two countries.
The General Authority of Ports and Customs in Syria announced today, Sunday, that the seizure took place during routine inspection of the luggage of passengers arriving through the port.
In a statement to the Syrian News Agency “SANA,” the Director of the Commission’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Mazen Alloush, explained that the careful inspection operation resulted in the seizure of 2,600 grams of hashish and 17 grams of heroin, indicating that the materials were tightly hidden to camouflage themselves and bypass approved customs procedures.
Alloush confirmed that the necessary customs control has been organized and legal procedures have been taken, pointing out that the Authority will continue its efforts to combat narcotic drug smuggling and tighten field control at various border crossings to protect the security and safety of society.
This operation comes as an extension of a series of previous seizures at Syrian border crossings, the most notable of which was the thwarting by customs personnel at the “Jidiya Yabous” border crossing, on October 8 and 9, of last year, two attempts to smuggle more than half a million Captagon pills, according to what SANA reported.
These developments bring the issue of combating smuggling across the Lebanese-Syrian border back to the forefront, at a time when the General Authority of Ports and Customs is stressing the continuation of its supervisory measures to pursue networks of smuggling prohibited materials and limit their passage.
