The municipality of Rmeish and its activities entered the crisis line in summoning Father Najib al-Amil, calling on the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, to intervene to address the issue, stressing that the controversial statements of the agent father “were misunderstood” in light of the exceptional circumstances of the southern border villages.
The municipality explained in a statement it issued that the background of the case goes back to a resident of the town carrying out unlicensed construction work on the roof of his house, which required judicial procedures to stop the violation and demand that the municipality implement the demolition decision on its own. She affirmed her full respect for the judiciary and the rule of law, but stressed the impossibility of implementing the decision without security support, pointing out that taking this step unilaterally may put the municipality in direct confrontation with the people and threaten civil peace at a time when Rmeish suffers from extremely delicate security and living conditions.
Regarding the phrase that Father Najib addressed to the judge in question in a denunciatory and questioning tone: “What do we want to do, we will blame the Israelis?”, the municipality explained that the intervention came to avoid any internal problem, and that the phrase was taken out of context and was not an expression of bullying against Israel, but rather came to indicate the impossibility of resorting to any external party as an alternative to legitimacy, and to warn of the sensitivity of the situation, stressing that “miscommunication” led to him being summoned for investigation.
The municipality stressed that Rmeish has always adhered to the state, its institutions, and coexistence, noting that the people of the border villages “taste both things” to preserve their land, and only ask for an active presence of the state at their side.
At the conclusion of its statement, the municipality of Rmeish and its activists declared full solidarity with the agent father, rejecting any political exploitation of the incident, and calling on President Joseph Aoun to intervene within the constitutional and legal frameworks and in a way that preserves the independence of the judiciary, expressing its confidence that the state will not abandon the sons of Rmeish who are steadfast in the face of dangers.
