In light of the escalation of internal tensions and the rise in political discourse, coinciding with the continued Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri reiterated the priority of national unity, warning of the seriousness of the repercussions of internal divisions on general stability in the country.
In this context, MP Qasim Hashem explained, in a statement to Al-Diyar newspaper, that the Speaker of Parliament’s reading of the political scene is based on his monitoring of the recent verbal escalation and the tensions it may generate that serve the Israeli agenda aimed at attacking internal security and stirring up strife.
Hashem pointed out that Berri expresses great concern about developments on the ground in the south, pointing out that Israel is working through multiple paths to weaken the Lebanese front.
He added that one of the most prominent existing concerns is the future of the International Emergency Forces (UNIFIL), warning that any attempt to end its role or its southern presence will reflect negatively on the implementation of International Resolution 1701, and pave the way for pressures aimed at imposing direct communication between the Lebanese army and the Israeli army.
Hashem stressed that these data prompted Berri to raise his voice again to protect internal unity, as it is the basic pillar of strength in the face of the dangers surrounding Lebanon, whether internal or external.
On the field and political level, Al-Diyar quoted informed political sources as expecting that this month of October will witness heated developments, suggesting that Israel will escalate its attacks before the due internal elections, while ruling out the expansion of the scope of confrontations outside the borders of the south, given calculations linked to the American position and the controls on regional escalation with Iran.
