In light of the escalation of tension and the intensification of positions between Washington and Tehran, Turkey and Pakistan are leading intensive diplomatic movements to bring the views of the two sides closer together and push them towards the negotiating table to reach a settlement that ends the current conflict.
In this context, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan revealed efforts led by his country, in cooperation with other countries, to formulate new proposals aimed at ending the war and pushing the US-Iranian negotiations towards practical results.
Fidan explained, in statements to the Turkish “NTV” channel on Saturday evening, that diplomatic efforts are ongoing despite the absence of details about the nature of these proposals, pointing out that “the strong lack of trust between the two parties” represents the main obstacle to the negotiating path, at a time when each side seeks to protect its own interests.
The Turkish moves come ahead of an upcoming meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, which begins next Tuesday. These efforts coincide with Iran’s adherence to its seven conditions for returning to negotiations, in exchange for Trump’s recent hint that a fateful decision regarding the Iranian file will be imminent.
In parallel, Islamabad continues its diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis. The Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, held discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on current regional developments.
During the call, the Pakistani diplomat stressed the necessity of continuing energy supplies and ensuring the safe and rapid passage of ships, in order to avoid the repercussions of the crisis on developing countries and global supply chains, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the best options for achieving regional peace and stability.
The Pakistani and Iranian sides agreed to enhance joint coordination and hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.
