The US Embassy in Yemen launched a sharp attack on the Houthi group and its Iranian supporters, considering that the group had turned Yemen into a base used by Iran for what it described as “undermining Arab unity and security.”
The embassy said, in a statement on Wednesday, that the Houthis and their Iranian supporters “miscalculated” when they underestimated the determination of the Yemeni government, the armed forces, and the Yemeni people to end what it described as “Houthi aggression and its brutality.”
She added that the Houthis “have brought nothing but suffering to Yemen,” noting that they have turned the country into a base used by Iran. She also relied on a statement issued by the UN Security Council on August 7, which she said held the Houthis’ practices responsible for igniting the current escalation with Iranian support.
On Tuesday, the US Embassy confirmed that the Houthi group was the one who started the conflict, holding it responsible for the consequences of what it described as its “aggression,” and stressing that the Yemeni government is the only legitimate government in the country.
She also said that the Yemeni government “has the full right to defend its people and end the Houthis’ ability to practice terrorism,” stressing at the same time the right of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to defend its lands and citizens, and to support the Yemeni government in its efforts against the Houthis.
The American statement comes in conjunction with the escalation of confrontations in Yemen, at a time when Washington continues to declare its support for the Yemeni government and Saudi Arabia in confronting the Houthi attacks.
