In the wake of the widespread confusion sparked by the incident of a number of people being infected with the “Trichinella” bacteria and the subsequent closure of a restaurant in the capital, Beirut, and the accompanying reluctance of citizens to eat meat in cafes and restaurants for fear of the possibility of it being mixed with pork, an elite group of prominent restaurant owners specializing in serving meat quickly mobilized their efforts, stressing the strict hygiene and food safety standards followed in their cooking operations.
In this context, the owners of a number of major restaurants in Lebanon confirmed that the dangerous “Trichinella” bacteria is found exclusively in the meat of pigs and bears, while the meals served by their restaurants are limited exclusively to the meat of cows and sheep.
Restaurant owners called on citizens to be reassured and continue to eat meat normally, stressing that there is no reason for fear, and explaining that any parasites or bacteria that may be present in regular meat are completely eliminated by the heat during the cooking process.
