On Thursday, North Korea escalated its military activities by launching about 12 short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area, in the latest step that increases the heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula.
The South Korean army confirmed, according to Yonhap, that it had monitored these launches, after the Joint Chiefs of Staff had announced earlier the same day that it had monitored the launch of a projectile towards the sea off the eastern coast of North Korea.
In the same regional context, the Japanese Coast Guard reported that the projectile was likely to be a ballistic missile, confirming that it fell into the sea. This was supported by the Japanese Ministry of Defense, which also announced monitoring the launch of a weapon suspected of being ballistic, according to Yonhap.
This is the first time that Pyongyang has launched ballistic missiles since last October 12, in light of escalating border tensions between the two Koreas, against the backdrop of a mine explosion that injured South Korean soldiers last month. It is noteworthy that North Korea has conducted missile tests on more than ten occasions during the current year.
