European gas reaches its peak since 2022, exceeding the 97 euro barrier

Natural gas prices in Europe recorded their highest rise since 2022 during Monday’s trading, exceeding the barrier of 97 euros per megawatt-hour, in light of mounting concerns about the balance of supplies during the winter and continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East region.

Bloomberg News reported that standard European gas futures contracts continued their recorded gains, rising by about 3.5 percent at the beginning of the session, driven by expectations of growth in demand for heating purposes in the coming days, coinciding with a wave of falling temperatures across the continent.

These gains coincide with a state of scarcity affecting global gas markets, which portends intensifying competition between buyers on the European and Asian continents to secure liquefied natural gas shipments.
