Israel has raised its security and military alert level in anticipation of the elections scheduled for October 27, amid fears of attempts to disrupt the voting process or exploit the stage to open a new escalation front. In this context, Israeli media reported preparations for a possible confrontation with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The Israeli Walla website reported that Defense Minister Yisrael Katz issued instructions to the army to raise the level of vigilance and readiness, after reviewing security scenarios warning of the possibility of escalation before or during the elections, amid security concerns about hostile parties trying to influence the course of the vote.
The strict precautionary measures taken by the military establishment included preventing a number of soldiers from leaving their bases, strengthening operations rooms, expanding the intelligence information bank, as well as raising the readiness of forces stationed on the border in anticipation of any emergency.
The website reported that Minister Katz holds periodic security assessments with the participation of military and security leaders to discuss potential threats and mechanisms for confronting them, covering various land and air fronts and long-range threats.
In a related context, Israeli media reports, based on a security source, indicated preparations for a new round of fighting with Hezbollah, without clarifying whether these preparations were exclusively related to securing the elections, in light of the absence of any official announcement so far about a decision to launch a large-scale military operation in Lebanon.
These developments coincide with continued tension on the Lebanese front, despite the cessation of hostilities agreement in effect since November 2024, and the accompanying problems surrounding the Israeli withdrawal, the deployment of the Lebanese army, and the future of Hezbollah’s arsenal.
The areas of southern Lebanon are still subject to repeated Israeli raids and targets. Beirut demands an end to these attacks and a complete withdrawal from Lebanese territory, while Tel Aviv adheres to its right to take military action to thwart any security threats on its northern borders.
Lifting the state of alert ahead of the electoral deadline confirms the extent of security concerns over the intersection of the political and military fields, at a time when options for escalation remain open on more than one front.
