The European Football Association (UEFA) sent an official warning to the International Federation (FIFA), demanding that it provide comprehensive clarifications regarding a package of administrative and financial decisions issued by its president, Gianni Infantino. UEFA has set a deadline of November 2nd to respond to 42 questions dealing with transparency, governance, and potential conflicts of interest.
The list of inquiries includes a controversial project to sell shares in the commercial rights to the World Cup to private investors, in addition to shedding light on the nature of the relationships between Infantino and the family of US President Donald Trump and some of the circles close to her.
This European escalation comes in the wake of the recent FIFA Council meeting, where UEFA considered that the responses provided by Infantino were insufficient, stressing the need to immediately disclose documents related to the investment project and the decision-making mechanisms related to it.
The list of questions also included inquiries about the “FIFA Peace Prize” and a number of disciplinary decisions, amid European insistence on clarifying the ambiguity surrounding the decision-making mechanisms within the international football body.
This escalatory move indicates a widening gap between the continental and international federations, coinciding with Infantino’s preparations to run in the upcoming FIFA presidential elections in 2027.
