Representative Salim Al-Sayegh revealed new information he received from President Joseph Aoun regarding the ongoing investigations into the explosives file, stressing that the investigations will expand to include uncovering all those involved locally and regionally.
In an interview on Al-Arabiya channel, Al-Sayegh explained that he met with the President of the Republic and clearly inquired from him whether there were any obstacles that might hinder the course of the investigation freely. He was quoted as saying that “the ceiling is the sky,” confirming the presence of detainees and perpetrators from “Hezbollah,” and that the investigators have full powers.
He pointed out that the file was transferred from the government commissioner at the military court to army intelligence for expansion, indicating that the investigations aim to uncover all those involved, both Lebanese and Syrian, and pointing at the same time to the presence of Syrian groups from the former regime who sympathize with Hezbollah and continue to coordinate with it, while acknowledging that cooperation between Lebanon and Syria to combat terrorism remains a natural matter.
Regarding the nature of the seized items, Al-Sayegh stressed the impossibility of using these materials in military operations, stressing that their type is usually used in terrorist acts such as assassinations, car bombs, and bombing buildings.
In comparison with the Beirut port nitrate issue, Al-Sayegh wondered about the purpose of storing hundreds of tons of explosives, denying that they were directed against Israel, and considering that “Hezbollah” was no longer in a position that allowed it to engage directly in southern Lebanon.
Al-Sayegh concluded by stressing that the case goes beyond being a potential crime, considering that the process of transporting and storing explosives constitutes in itself a described crime that exposes the security of the state and citizens to imminent danger.
